In
these two albums you'll meet "Rita May", my
Schutzhund competition dog. Rita is a rescue.
Rita
May, a Winning Rescue Story.
October
2005 and Hurricane Rita had recently made a swipe across
south Florida before setting its destructive eye of
parts of Texas and Louisiana.
Some
folks from the South Florida Schutzhund Club, Phil Hoelcher,
Karen Grier and Amanda Campbell were out one early morning
at some local tracking fields and there she was.
Obviously
a Malinois stray, all legs and rib bones, just hanging
out and watching what was going on. Phil and Karen rounded
her up…all forty pounds of her. Scratched and
scraped and full of worms.
Amanda
took her in. They called her Rita May after the hurricane,
and ran “found dog” ads and put up flyers,
but no one ever came to claim her.
Amanda
says it took four months before Rita was able to eat
a full meal and keep it down. She was a challenge to
put any weight on. Amanda had to change foods constantly
to keep her interested in eating at all.
But
Phil saw the potential in Rita May…and in Amanda.
He told Amanda that Rita May would be a good dog for
her to learn on and so it began.
Rita
May was so grateful to have a warm house and a bed to
sleep in, that before long, she refused to leave Amanda’s
side. Even the tiniest movement, and Rita May was in
Amanda’s lap.
